Educational Standards of the Priesthood

Priests of the Society of St James typically hold as a minimum educational standard the Master of Divinity (or its equivalent if educated outside f the United States). The Master of Divinity is typically a 90 Semester-Hour program of instruction.

Men who desire to become priests in the Society of St James holding the Master of Divinity (MDiv) from seminaries not within a sacramental tradition will go through a directed studies program prior to ordination.

In rare exceptions, men who are entering ministry as a “second career” may go through an extensive directed studies program. This program takes three or more years (depending on how much time the postulant can dedicate to study) and results in an education functionally equivalent to the MDiv.

All priests in the Society of St James are encouraged to engage in continued education and professional development both through formal education and through ongoing reading (inclusive of the titles on the Bishop’s Reading List).
